Carnations

These beloved blooms are available in many standard and fringed varieties. Carnations serve as symbolic flowers around the world, and are a favorite for cut arrangements. They're the national flower of Spain, the state flower of Ohio, and many fraternities and sororities claim the carnation as a symbol.

Botanical Name:

Dianthus

Most Popular Colors: White, red, green, pink, purple. The original variant is a bright pink-purple.

Blooming Season: Late spring, summer.

Soil Preferences: Extremely well-drained soil is important. Carnations prefer slightly alkaline soil.

Climate Preferences: Carnations are hardy, and can survive in regions with cold winters.

Sun Exposure: Partial shade to full sun.

Landscaping Tips: Carnations are perfect border flowers, and look very pretty in small clusters. Carnations are known for their attractive green foliage, which doesn't fade until well after the blooming season.

Planting: Select a sunny spot with great drainage for planting, and space the plants 9 to 15 inches apart. Carnations prefer slightly alkaline soil, so consider adding lime or woodash to the planting site. Plant the carnations at the same level they were growing during shipment, and water in well.

Care: Cut off spent blossoms after the blooming season has ended. In fall, cut back the plants to about four inches from the ground. These are short-lived perennials - expect a few seasons before needing to reseed. Carnations should be watered regularly - at least one inch of water per week during the growing season.
