How to Plant, Grow and Care for Hollyhocks

Hollyhocks have sturdy, woody stalks which can grow to impressive heights. They're beloved for their showy, rounded petals and numerous varieties. In the Victorian Language of Flowers, hollyhocks symbolize ambition.

Most Popular Colors: Wild species are pink or yellow; cultivars have established popular white, red, and midnight varieties.

Blooming Season: Midsummer through frost.

Soil Preferences: Like most sun perennials, hollyhocks prefer well-drained soil that is moderately fertile.

Climate Preferences: Hollyhocks will grow in any temperate climate.

Sun Exposure: Partial shade to full sun.

Landscaping Tips: Hollyhocks are drought resistant, making them excellent plants for the tough-to-garden sunny spots in your yard. Remember that hollyhocks may require staking if planted in an open area, so consider planting near a sunny wall or fence.

Care:

• Hollyhocks have a short blooming period, which can be extended by removing dead flowers as soon as they are spent.
• Most varieties of hollyhocks live only two to three seasons. However, hollyhocks reseed themselves annually. So, you will likely have hollyhocks for years after the original plants have died.
• Be sure to watch for fungal infections of your plants. Water from below, and treat with a fungicide if a problem develops.
