When should you plant passion flower vines?
Plant passion flower vines in the spring, after all threat of frost has passed. Keep in mind that passion flowers are not cold-hardy in all of the United States, so keep an eye on the weather to prevent frost damage. Some gardeners plant these tropical flowers in containers and overwinter them indoors, which provides an elegant solution to the issue of frost. If you're planting in containers, you can place the containers outdoors after the air has warmed and the final frost date has gone by.

How much sun do passion flower vines need?
Most species of passion flowers can handle full or partial shade. For the best possible performance, plant your passion flowers in a location where they receive dappled sunlight, or sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. These plants need several hours per day of sunlight in order to bloom and fruit, but too much sun in the hot afternoon can scorch the leaves. A sheltered location, such as a place against a wall or fence, can protect your vines from damage by wind or harsh weather.

What type of soil is best for passion flower vines?
Passion flowers, like many tropical plants, prefer rich, nutrient-heavy soil. However, drainage is also of utmost importance, as soggy feet can kill your passion flower vine. If your soil is heavy in clay or sand, add peat or loam to enrich the soil. As you prepare your soil prior to planting, mix in plenty of compost to create a richer, more fertile growing location.

How often should you water passion flower vines?
Passion flowers need consistently moist soil that is well-watered but not soggy. typically need 1 or 1.5 inches of water each week, so water your passion flowers twice per week when your garden doesn't receive rain. Keep in mind that passion flowers grown in containers or in shallow planting mediums need to be watered more frequently.

When should you prune passion flower vines?
Your passion flowers may or may not need to be pruned! Passion flowers don't actually require regular pruning, but they can be pruned to maintain size or to remove long shoots. Pruning can also help to encourage fuller growth. Because passion flowers bloom on new growth, not old, you can prune the plant either after the growing season in winter or before the growing season in spring. However, if you live in a cold climate, your passion flowers may die back naturally as the weather cools. In zones 6 and colder, go ahead and cut back your passion vines in the fall.
